Urban One Radio Streams Live From Plainfield’s Youth Summit

On January 16, 2016, a youth summit was held at the historic duCret, School of Art on Central Avenue in Plainfield, New Jersey. The event was organized by Mayor Adrian O. Mapp in collaboration with the GrassROOTS Community Foundation. The Urban One Family had the privilege of streaming live from the Youth Summit, covering intense conversations on education and employment in the community as well as interviewing guest speakers such as Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, Janice Johnson PhD., and DJ Lil’ Man.

Urban One Radio had the chance to speak with the many individuals and youth-serving organizations who are overlooked in the community. There have many complaints about the lack of youth-based services in urban communities, but the organizations at Plainfield’s Youth Summit proved these accusations to be false with about ten different groups uniting to discuss ideas to pave a pathway to success for our future leaders.

The heart-felt interview with gospel rapper, producer, and songwriter Brother Hahz was one of the most touching interviews of that day. After performing his song “Don’t Shoot” live for the leaders and youth of the summit, Brother Hahz sat down with Urban One’s very own Al-Stylez and Bee Soulful to stream live and discuss the trials and tribulations as a young man that inspired him to share his testimony. With black on black crime and police brutality on a rise, we must teach our children to love self and one another. Without the support from one another we will forever be stuck in the vicious cycle of hatred. He discussed Hahz was shot approximately two inches from his heart and lived to tell this story. Unfortunately as a young boy his father was also shot in the chest but did not have the opportunity to live the life that was given to him. Hahz’s song “Don’t Shoot” rocked the crowd but also reminding the youth that violence will never be a solution to the social issues we are going though as a community.

The youth of Plainfield was very much involved in the questions and ideas the panel had to offer. Urban One Radio was excited to stream live to share the upcoming ideas and events with those who weren’t able to make it!
